955 dead in Nepal-China flash flood, MEA says 158 Indians rescued

The toll in the flash flood and mudslide in Nepal and China, which occurred on Wednesday, rose to 955 on Monday. Of these, 939 deaths were reported in Nepal.

The remaining 16 deaths were on the Chinese side of the border, AFP reported.

More than 3,900 persons were missing in Nepal and more than 500 in China. Those missing in Nepal included 275 Indians, New Delhi had said on Saturday night. It was unclear if the number had changed in the two days after that.

More than 11,300 persons have been rescued in Nepal as of 6 pm on Monday, the country’s disaster management authority said. This included 158 Indians, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday.

The floods occurred in the Rasuwa district along Nepal’s northern border with China on Wednesday. The mountainous district is located about 120 km north of Kathmandu. As there was no rainfall in the area, residents did not have a warning about the deluge.
