Punjab Police register FIR over alleged rape after protests at Lovely Professional University

A first information report has been filed against an unknown person on charges of rape after students of Lovely Professional University in Punjab’s Phagwara staged protests against the alleged incident of sexual assault on campus, PTI reported on Sunday.

The protests that began late Saturday night turned violent early Sunday morning, with students damaging university property, setting some objects on fire and blocking the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway, the news agency reported.

Protests have erupted at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar following an allegation that a female student was raped inside Girls Hostel 3, reportedly by an electrician working on campus.

The FIR was registered based on statements recorded from students, Jalandhar Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Naveen Singla said.

A female student who stayed in the university hostel was raped three days ago, The Indian Express quoted the protesting students as saying. They claimed that the university administration had not taken action after the alleged sexual assault.
“We are verifying the facts,” the deputy inspector general of police said.

He later said that a Special Investigation Team had been formed to probe the matter, ANI reported.
