Janata Dal (United) leader Nishant Kumar, the son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, took oath as a minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state Cabinet on Thursday.
Thirty-one others were also inducted as ministers as part of the first Cabinet expansion of the Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary government since he took oath on April 15.
Nishant Kumar had joined the JD(U) in March, marking his official entry into politics. An engineer who studied at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra in Ranchi, had largely stayed away from public life until his induction into the party.
He is not an MLA and will have to be elected to the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council within six months.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. It was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other National Democratic Alliance leaders.
The NDA had retained power in Bihar in the Assembly elections held in November. The JD(U) had won 85 seats, almost doubling its tally of 43 seats from the 2020 polls. However, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party, winning 89 of the 101 constituencies it contested. Nitish Kumar became the chief minister for the 10th time.
