The parents of Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay student Sahil Wakode, who died by suicide a month ago, were detained by Mumbai Police on Sunday while sitting at a protest site inside the campus, The Indian Express reported.

Ravindra Wakode and Sonali Wakode had arrived at the campus to pay homage to their son, who died on September 18. Ravindra Wakode had also submitted a letter to the institute’s registrar.

At least 16 protesting students were also detained as the police cleared and demolished the site near the institute’s main gate, the Daily Pioneer reported.

Student groups accused the police of using excessive force while detaining the protesters, alleging that they were kicked, choked and had their clothes torn, the newspaper reported.

The Mumbai Police and the IIT-Bombay administration are yet to make a statement on the incident.
