Centrally located, no distractions: Why Syed Ahmad Khan chose Aligarh to establish a university

Determined to establish an educational institution modelled on England’s finest schools, Syed Ahmad travelled to Great Britain in 1869 to study their system firsthand. This transformative visit, which deeply impressed him with European educational advances, inspired him to establish the Khwastgaran-i-Taraqqi-i-Talim-i-Musalman (Committee for the Better Diffusion of Education among Muslims) on December 26, 1870. This committee studied the cause of Muslim backwardness in education and convinced him of the need to establish an institute of higher learning that imparted “traditional education along with the highest level of modern education.

Though Syed Ahmad preferred Aligarh for the central Muslim college, he sought public consensus through newspaper announcements and diverse opinions. He envisioned the potential location in his words:

“The students should have as few temptations as possible, … their thoughts and notions, instead of wandering astray, should take a turn to calmness and serenity.

Syed Ahmad selected Aligarh based on several strategic considerations.
