Assam: Four alleged members of armed gang killed in gunfight with security forces, say police

Four suspected members of an armed gang were killed in a gunfight with the police on Sunday morning in Assam’s Goalpara district, The Indian Express reported.
The alleged gunfight took place in the Dhupdhara region, unidentified police officers told the newspaper.
Those killed were identified as Mukunda Rabha, Subur Ali, Zahidul Islam and Chengbat Marak, Hub News reported.
Goalpara Senior Superintendent of Police Nabaneet Mahanta told The Indian Express that barricades had been set up to check vehicles after authorities received information about armed gangsters moving around in the area.
“For quite a few days, there was information that some criminal gang with arms has been on the move in the area at the border of Assam and Meghalaya,” The Indian Express quoted Mahanta as saying. “On the basis of that, we have been carrying out operations for the last some days.”
The police received information on Sunday morning that the alleged gang was “moving towards this side with the intent of a kidnapping attempt”, he added.
“They were moving towards here in a vehicle,” the police officer said. “When they saw the police party here, at first they tried to go back and when they saw they couldn’t, they fired at the police party. In retaliation and in self-defence our party fired at them.”
