The green space of New York is designed on an altogether different scale and enclosure. The permanent visibility of the city, its vibrancy of size and height, is forever present in Manhattan’s many and varied forms of landscape. In a place of formidable urban density, the landscape always appears as precious space held in architectural captivity – sometimes a square of leafy trees on stone paving surrounded by apartment blocks, sometimes a 50th-floor balcony with a terrace garden. New York is amply endowed with as much designed open space as accidental reveals. In one such instance, a small graveyard belonging to an 18th-century Greek Orthodox church sits along one of the busiest high-rise streets of lower Manhattan. The frenzy of the financial district is hard to miss in a part of town where Wall Street bankers spend much of the day scurrying between the office and the stock exchange. In an area so overbuilt, the old churchyard provides much-needed relief. As its garden is open to the public, many traders can be seen sitting for lunch in the high grass overlooked by skyscrapers.
