Tamil Nadu: VCK announces support to TVK, Vijay to meet governor soon

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi on Saturday announced support for actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the government in Tamil Nadu, ANI reported.

VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan said that the decision was taken so that his party would not become an obstacle to Vijay forming the government, and so that President’s Rule is not imposed.

The TVK chief is now set to meet the governor to stake claim to form the government.

The support of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s two seats helped TVK secure a majority in the Assembly. This came five days after the TVK, on its electoral debut, emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections.

Vijay’s party won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the majority mark of 118. Therefore, it requires the support of smaller parties to form the government.

On Friday, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), each having two seats, announced their support for the TVK. The Congress, which won five seats, had declared its support for the Vijay-led party on Wednesday.

The effective strength of the TVK is 107 because Vijay is required to vacate one of the two seats he won.
