Former Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, Belonging: A Journey in Love, will be published on November 10 by Alfred A Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
The memoir will trace her journey from a childhood in a small village in Italy, to the romance that brought her to India, and shattering losses – including her mother-in-law and husband’s assassination – that would go on to reshape not only her own future but also that of her adopted home.
For several years Gandhi resisted the pressure to join politics, but ultimately accepted the challenge and went on to become the longest-serving president of the Indian National Congress Party. However, after a key election, when the Congress Party selected her to be prime minister, she declined the highest office and chose instead to lead her party in an alliance that would govern the country for a decade.
The memoir promises to be a dramatic account, epic yet intimate, and give readers a unique lens on India – its tumultuous post-independence history and its present political struggles, offering an insider’s keen perspective on the country’s enormous economic and social changes over 60 years.
