Rush Hour: Ujjain mosque demolition protest turns violent, SC’s 4-month deadline on TMC row & more

The police in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain fired tear gas at Muslim residents protesting against the demolition of a portion of a mosque. The protesters threw stones at police personnel.

The Ujjain Municipal Corporation carried out the demolition to widen a road ahead of the Simhastha religious gathering, scheduled to be held in March 2028. Crowds had also gathered outside the Shahi Masjid on Sunday night to protest against the demolition. Some people stayed in the mosque overnight.

The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to decide within four months which of the two Trinamool Congress factions is authorised to use the party’s original name and symbol. The factions have been given one month to complete their pleas before the poll body after which the panel will have three months to decide the matter.

On September 17, the Election Commission barred both factions from using the party’s original name and symbol in the October 6 bye-polls. The next day, it allotted new names and symbols to the factions as an interim measure.
