Rush Hour: Police lathi-charge Jharkhand protesters, BJP leaders detained outside CM home and more

Several protesters were injured in Jharkhand’s Ranchi after the police lathi-charged them and fired tear gas during a march to the Assembly. The protesters organised the march on the 17th day of their demonstration against the alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive examinations for government jobs.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the police action against the protesters and urged the Jharkhand government to listen to them and resolve their grievances. The Congress is a member of the ruling Mahagathbandhan alliance in the state, headed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Public Service Commission’s former chairperson L Khiangte was arrested by the state Criminal Investigation Department in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Read on.

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were detained while protesting outside Soren’s home. This came a day after the Jharkhand government agreed to cancel three examinations after talks with two delegations of protesting students.

The government also agreed to involve the Enforcement Directorate in an inquiry into alleged financial irregularities linked to the 14th civil services examination.
