Rush Hour: Mamata’s TMC gets new name and symbol, Umar Khalid documentary screening cancelled & more

The Election Commission on Friday allotted new names and symbols to the two factions of the Trinamool Congress. The group led by Mamata Banerjee was assigned the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” with the symbol “football player”.

The Arup Roy faction of the party was allotted the name of “Democratic Trinamool Congress” with the "envelope as its symbol.

On Thursday, the commission had barred both factions from using the name of the Trinamool Congress name as well as the “flowers and grass” symbol in the upcoming Assembly bye-polls on October 6. Read on.

Mamata Banerjee said that her faction of the TMC will support the Congress candidate in the Nandigram Assembly bye-elections. This followed the announcement of the group’s candidate, Sanchita Pradhan, that she was withdrawing her nomination.

The Congress has fielded Milan Pradhan from Nandigram. Banerjee said that her faction had decided to support the Congress “in the greater interest of the country” and to strengthen the Opposition INDIA bloc.
