RJD MP Manoj Jha moves SC seeking FIRs against police officers who fired at protesters in Bihar

Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha has moved the Supreme Court seeking the registration of first information reports against police officers who opened fire at protesters in Bihar demonstrating against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, reported Live Law on Monday.

The protests were held in solidarity with the youth agitation in Delhi to demand the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union education minister at the time. Pradhan resigned on Saturday.

On Saturday, three protesters were injured after the police opened fire during a demonstration in Bihar’s Siwan district after the demonstrators allegedly threw stones at security personnel.

The police had also opened fire during violent protests in Jehanabad on Thursday.

In his petition, Jha sought directions from the Supreme Court to state governments to initiate criminal and disciplinary proceedings against police officers involved in incidents of alleged excessive force against protesters.

He also sought compensation and cost of medical care for those injured in the police action, reported Live Law.

The Rajya Sabha MP urged the Supreme Court to direct state governments not to intimidate, threaten or detain students who participated in the protests.

He said that the states should disclose the number and details of FIRs that have been registered against the students for participating in protests between July 20 and July 25.
