Twenty-nine persons have died in Punjab in the last one month as the state witnesses the worst floods in nearly four decades, reported Hindustan Times on Tuesday.
In 1988, more than 500 persons were killed in Punjab after flooding in the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers, according to The Indian Express.
The recent floods in the state have submerged around 2.32 lakh acres of farmland, primarily paddy fields, and impacted more than 2.56 lakh persons in 12 of the 23 districts, according to an official bulletin released on Monday.
This came as the state recorded 253.7 mm of rainfall in August, which is 74% above normal and the highest in 25 years, according to India Today.
All rivers in the state, including the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi and the Ghaggar, had breached danger marks, News18 reported.
The 12 worst-affected districts are Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Mansa, Rupnagar, Barnala, Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Patiala, Mohali and Sangrur. Road connectivity was cut off in several regions.
So far, 14,936 persons have been rescued by the National Disaster Response Force, Army, Border Security Force and district authorities.
