At least six schools in Bhopal were closed on Wednesday because of the traffic disruptions expected during a “save democracy, remove anarchy” march organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Dainik Bhaskar reported.
The district education officer on Tuesday issued an order asking all government and private schools to assess the likely impact of traffic congestion and diversions on the commute of students and make necessary changes to school timings, including declaring a holiday if required, The Times of India reported.
The march passed through New Market, one of Bhopal’s busy commercial areas.
The rally in the capital of the BJP-ruled state was organised in response to Opposition protests since October 2 demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns about the Election Commission’s functioning and alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
The Hindutva party has held similar rallies in Jabalpur, Indore and Hyderabad, among other cities.
Opposition reaction
Congress state president Jitu Patwari asked why children and parents should “bear the brunt” of disruptions caused by the BJP’s rally.
He added: “Has education for kids in Madhya Pradesh now become hostage to the BJP’s so-called programs?”
