Manipur: Nine killed within 24 hours in three districts

Nine persons were killed between Friday and Saturday in Manipur’s Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, the Hindustan Times reported, quoting unidentified police officials.
At least 14 homes were burnt in Kamjong and the district authorities have imposed prohibitory orders within a 400-metre radius of Chassad police station.
The violence followed the death of a 42-year-old woman, who was killed in the Kuki-dominated Chassad village in Naga-majority Kamjong district, reported PTI. A mother of five, the woman was shot near her neck on Friday night during a gunfight between armed groups and security forces.
The gunfight had started after security forces arrested some village volunteers, reported Hindustan Times.
The term “village volunteers” has been used for armed civilians guarding villages since ethnic clashes broke out in the state between the Kuki and Meitei groups in May 2023.
The women’s death on Friday triggered an exchange of fire between Kuki and Naga armed groups, reported PTI. A 22-year-old man was killed in the clashes and at least 14 homes belonging to members of the Kuki and Naga communities were burnt.
Separately, suspected militants opened fire in the Ningchou village, a Tangkhul Naga settlement near the Myanmar border, in Kamjong, reported PTI.
