A farmer was killed in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna on Sunday after a Bharatiya Janata Party leader and several aides ran a vehicle over him in connection with a land dispute, Dainik Bhaskar reported.
The incident took place when the farmer, Ram Swaroop Dhakad, was on his way to his field in Ganeshpura village with his wife, India Today quoted the police as saying.
The complaint states that BJP leader Mahendra Nagar and his aides surrounded Dhakad, beat him with sticks and rods, and ran a vehicle over him.
The victim’s family alleged that Nagar had been threatening small farmers in the region to sell their land at cheap prices, and that Dhakad’s refusal to comply led to the assault, Aaj Tak reported.
When Dhakad’s teenage daughters heard their parents’ cries and went to help, they too were allegedly attacked, India Today reported.
“I went to save my father,” one of the daughters was quoted as saying. “They sat on top of me, assaulted me and even tore my clothes. They also shot at me.”
Police officers said the injured farmer was prevented from being taken to hospital for about an hour, as the assailants with guns allegedly kept guard over his body. Dhakad was eventually taken to the district hospital, where he died during treatment.
