The Kolkata Police has summoned Trinamool Congress leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien in connection with a case involving allegations that they assaulted police personnel and obstructed them from discharging their duties when a team went to remove a signboard of the party from a building on Camac Street, The Indian Express reported on Sunday.

Banerjee and O’Brien have been asked to appear at the Shakespeare Sarani police station on Monday.

Three first information reports have been registered in connection with Thursday’s incident under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to unlawful assembly, obstructing and assaulting public servants, causing hurt, criminal intimidation and use of force against a woman, among others.

The incident took place when police personnel and officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation arrived at the Trinamool Congress office on Camac Street to remove a signboard bearing the party’s name, “All India Trinamool Congress”, installed on the top of the building. Most of the units in the building are occupied by offices associated with Banerjee.

In one of the FIRs, the police have alleged that the signboard was hanging dangerously and stated that the municipal corporation had been directed to remove it for safety.
