The Jharkhand Police has placed former Chief Minister Champai Soren and Bharatiya Janata Party leader under house arrest on Sunday as “a preventive measure” in view of protests organised by Adivasi outfits against the acquisition of land for a state-run health institute, PTI reported.

“Champai Soren is under house arrest as a preventive measure to maintain law and order in view of the tribal outfits’ protests,” the news agency quoted Ranchi City Deputy Superintendent of Police as saying.

The former chief minister described the move as “undemocratic” and said that his house arrest was ordered due to his support for the Adivasis and their protest, PTI reported.

Soren had joined the BJP on August 30 2024, two days after having quit the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

On February 2, 2024, he had taken charge as chief minister after Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Hemant Soren quit the post. Hemant Soren had resigned as the chief minister after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money-laundering case.

Champai Soren resigned on July 3, 2024, days after the Jharkhand High Court granted Hemant Soren bail.
