Do you live near the coast in Mumbai or Kolkata?

Then, according to the United Nations, you could be among the 14 million people at risk of losing their homes to flooding caused by rising seas.

Both the cities – two of India’s most populous urban centres – continue to build expensive real estate along the coast despite a steady rise in sea water levels due to climate change and the increasing intensity of cyclonic storms. Worse, these projects are being built by destroying mangroves, wetlands and natural drains that act as buffers against coastal erosion.

Neither the real estate industry nor public authorities have cared to inform home buyers and coastal communities about these risks. As a result, many continue to invest their savings in apartments that could go under water in a few decades.

If you think this information must be publicly available, help us report from Mumbai and Kolkata. Led by Scroll’s award-winning climate reporter Vaishnavi Rathore, our team aims to map out the areas most vulnerable to coastal flooding and investigate if this risk-assessment has been part of real estate planning by private developers and government authorities.
