Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had once shown he was “unfit” to be the head of the state government, a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party leader accused him of being a “Pakistani agent, planted by a foreign power”.

The BJP has repeatedly claimed Gogoi’s wife has connections with Pakistan and its intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence. On Friday, Sarma reiterated the charges, PTI reported.

The chief minister also claimed that he had evidence to prove his allegations.

On Saturday, Gogoi said that Sarma had “lost” his credibility over the past few months.

“Yesterday, when the entire state was watching [singer] Zubeen Garg perform for the last time in Roi Roi Binale, the chief minister’s comments showed his growing fear of losing power,” the Jorhat MP said on social media. “It was another example of why he is unfit as the chief minister of the people of Assam.”

Garg, a renowned Assamese singer, died by drowning on September 19 during a yacht trip in Singapore, a day before he was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival there.

The event had been organised by the Indian government and the Indian High Commission in Singapore, with support from the Assam Association and the North East India Association in the country.
