Heavy rainfall continues in Kerala, yellow alert in 12 districts

Several districts of Kerala continued to record heavy rainfall on Monday, leading to waterlogging and traffic congestions, PTI reported.

While the India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for four districts – Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram and Kozhikode – for heavy to very heavy rain on Monday, the warning was revised to yellow for heavy rainfall in 12 districts on Tuesday morning, Mathrubhumi reported.

All districts except Kasaragod and Kannur were issued the warning.

While an orange alert requires the authorities to “be prepared” in view of an extreme weather event, a yellow alert means that the administration should “be updated” on the situation.

On Monday, the high ranges of southern Thiruvananthapuram, northern Kozhikode and Kannur districts witnessed widespread rain and overcast climate during the day, the news agency reported.

The rainfall had led to waterlogging on the Thiruvananthapuram-Thenkasi road.

In Kannur, water entered the premises of several houses and commercial establishments. Houses were also damaged because of lightning strikes in Thrissur district’s Mala and Elanji in Ernakulam, PTI reported.

The State Disaster Management Authority urged residents living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides and flash floods to move to safer locations as per the directions issued by the authorities.
