Govt considering major cut to food weighting in new CPI basket

An Indian government panel proposed lowering the food weight in the consumer price index by up to 8 percentage points to help manage inflation. This revision is based on more recent consumer spending surveys and may be implemented by January 2026. The food and beverage category currently makes up 54.2% of the CPI basket.
