Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday lost the Delhi Assembly election to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Parvesh Verma .

Verma defeated Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency by a margin of 4,089 votes, data from the Election Commission showed.

While Verma secured 30,088 votes, the former Delhi chief minister bagged 25,999. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit finished third with 4,568 votes.

Kejriwal has held the New Delhi Assembly constituency since 2013.

Kejriwal resigned as the Delhi chief minister on September 17, a week after he was released on bail in the Delhi liquor policy case. He had been arrested in March ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi then replaced Kejriwal as the chief minister. The AAP chief said that he will return to the post only after voters have expressed their support for him in the Assembly polls.

On Saturday, however, the BJP was on track to win the election. It was leading in 18 seats and had won 30 constituencies as of 3.50 pm. The AAP was leading in 7 seats and had won in 17 places.

The halfway mark for the 70-member Delhi Assembly in 36 seats.
