China views Taiwan's 'elimination' as national cause, Taiwan president says

China considers the annexation and "elimination" of Taiwan as a significant national objective, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te stated on Sunday. He addressed cadets at the military's top academy, emphasizing the importance of understanding their adversary and resisting defeatism. Lai, who took office last month, has faced constant personal attacks from China, which claims Taiwan as its territory. Shortly after Lai's inauguration, Beijing conducted military exercises around Taiwan.
