Assam floods toll rises to 66

The toll in flood-related incidents in Assam rose to 66 on Saturday with four more deaths reported from two districts, said the state disaster management authority.

While three persons died in Sivasagar, one death was reported from Charaideo.

More than 6.5 lakh persons in 10 districts have been affected by the floods. The districts are Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Hojai, Kamrup Metropolitan and Sivasagar.

The number of affected villages came down to 810 on Saturday from 900 on Wednesday.

Sivasagar was the worst-affected district, with 255 villages being inundated and more than 2.9 lakh persons impacted. This was followed by Charaideo, where 1.9 lakh persons have been affected by the floods and Jorhat, where over 1.3 lakh persons are reeling under the deluge.

The Dikhou and Dhansiri rivers continued to flow above the danger level in Sivasagar and Numaligarh.

Crops on 34,970.8 hectares of land have been damaged.

The disaster management authority said that the administration was operating 274 relief camps and aid distribution centres in six districts, sheltering 18,902 persons displaced by the floods.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party will provide clothing to children and women from two lakh flood-affected families.
