Youth protests: Goons being sent to students’ homes, alleges Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that persons who had taken part in the protests in July against the alleged mismanagement of competitive examinations were being harassed and goons were being sent to their homes.

Speaking at a press conference in the presence of protesters from New Delhi, Mumbai, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi said that nobody needs to “accept” their apology as they had not done anything wrong.

The leader of the Opposition’s remarks were purportedly in reference to a video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, in which he said that he wanted to forgive the students who had allegedly made objectionable remarks about him.

“I understand the anger in our society,” Modi had said. “There is a cultural shock about our daughters using such language. This is the time to show them the right path. They are misguided.”

On Wednesday, Gandhi said that while the students who had participated in the protests were standing in front of the media, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the prime minister “do not have the courage to do so”.
