The United States on Friday struck a tower at Iran’s Chabahar port, a photo shared by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth showed.

The strike on what appeared to be the Chabahar maritime control tower of the port, which Iran had been operating with support from India, was part of a series of wider attacks on Iran for the sixth consecutive night. The photo posted by Hegseth showed the tower collapsing.

The Chabahar port, particularly the Shahid Beheshti terminal, had been under the operational control of an Indian entity since 2018. The US Treasury had exempted the port from sanctions in 2018, but the country’s Donald Trump-led administration revoked the exemption in September.

The waiver on sanctions expired in April, which effectively brought Indian project activity at Chabahar to a halt, Business Line reported.

On Friday, the US military said that it hit dozens of Iranian military targets, such as coastal surveillance and air defence sites, military logistics infrastructure, and maritime capabilities.

The US Central Command said that it was “further degrading Iranian military capabilities and holding Iran accountable for recent attacks on commercial shipping”.

Bridges in the Hormozgan province, railway infrastructure near Bandar Abbas and the airport in Iranshahr were among the sites struck by the US, Al Jazeera reported.
