Updates: Nepal-China flash flood toll rises to 616, over 80 Indian tourists rescued

The toll in the flash flood and mudslide in Nepal increased to 616 on Saturday, the police said. More than 2,400 persons were missing.

More than 4,400 persons had been rescued, Prime Minister Balendra Shah said.

The Nepal Tourism Board said that 85 out of 183 missing Indian tourists had been rescued. At least 98 Indian tourists are still missing, the board said.

In all, 743 tourists had gone missing after the floods, including 149 Nepali citizens.

The Red Cross has said that as many as 93,000 persons may have been affected by the deluge, and the toll is expected to rise, AFP reported.

The floods occurred in the Rasuwa district along Nepal’s northern border with China on Wednesday. The mountainous district is located about 120 km north of Kathmandu. As there was no rainfall in the area, residents did not have a warning about the deluge.
