Two home ministry officials arrested for allegedly seeking bribe for FCRA registration

Two home ministry officials were arrested on Monday for allegedly seeking a bribe from an association in return for facilitating its pending registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.

Registration under the Act is mandatory for non-profit organisations to receive foreign funds.

One of the officials was posted in the ministry’s Foreigners Division, while the other worked in a Pay and Accounts Office and had previously been posted in the Foreigners Division, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated on Tuesday. Both officials were accountants.

“Preliminary questioning indicates that they were in contact with certain associations for facilitating their registration and renewal in lieu of illegal gratification,” the ministry added.

The investigation is underway.
