Delhi is under lockdown as the police have imposed unprecedented restrictions in the national capital to prevent young people from gathering at Jantar Mantar on October 10 to demand the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protests have been sparked by a recent report in the Indian Express that revealed that Kumar had kept his fellow election commissioners in the dark about crucial decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The exercise has disenfranchised millions of Indians.

But one resignation might not be enough to restore free and fair elections in the country since the problems with India’s election machinery run deep.
