Telangana: 20 Opposition MLAs suspended for remainder of Monsoon Session

Twenty legislators of the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi were on Wednesday suspended from the Telangana Assembly for the rest of the Monsoon Session for allegedly disrupting proceedings, The Indian Express reported.

The BRS has 27 MLAs in the 119-member Assembly. The Monsoon Session, which began on Monday, is scheduled to conclude on Friday.

The 20 legislators were suspended after more than an hour of confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BRS.

KT Rama Rao, the Opposition party’s chairperson and son of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s son, was among the legislators who were suspended.

The proceedings began with BRS legislators demanding “justice” for K Chandrashekar Rao, the leader of Opposition in the Assembly, over alleged disparaging remarks made about him by Congress MLA Veerlapally Shankar, reported The Indian Express.

BRS leaders alleged that Shankar had wished for Chandrashekar Rao’s “demise” in a public statement and demanded that he be suspended.

The Congress, however, accused the BRS of insulting Dalits. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and minister D Sridhar Babu alleged that BRS workers in Siddipet had performed a purification ritual after Dalit Congress leaders held a protest there, the newspaper reported.

Siddipet is where K Chandrashekar Rao’s home is.
