The Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday extended unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam for forming the government in Tamil Nadu.

The two communist parties have two MLAs each. With their backing, the total number of MLAs in support of the TVK-led government reached 119.

On Monday, the TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, winning 108 seats, but fell short of the halfway mark. The Congress, which has five MLAs, announced support from the party on Wednesday, followed by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which has two legislators.

After the announcement by the communist parties, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and staked claim to form the government.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary TT Shanmugam, however, said that the two parties will not be part of the cabinet, and that they only took the decision to ensure that there is no re-election, reported ANI.

The VCK, the CPI and the CPI (Marxist) were part of the alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
