Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single-largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, as the votes were counted on Monday.

The TVK, on its electoral debut, won 108 seats, data from the Election Commission showed.

However, the party fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly required to form the government on its own.

The ruling Secular Progressive Alliance won 73 seats. Of these, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 59 and the Congress five. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won two seats each.

The National Democratic Alliance, mainly comprising the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party, won 53. Of these, the AIADMK won 47 seats and the BJP one. The Pattali Makkal Katchi won four seats.

Polling in all 234 Assembly constituencies was held on April 23. A turnout of 85.1% was recorded.

Several exit polls had forecast that the MK Stalin-led DMK would retain power. However, one agency, Axis My India, predicted that TVK may emerge as the single largest party.
