The Supreme Court on Saturday registered a suo motu case in connection with the death of a woman in Madhya Pradesh, whose family has alleged that her in-laws harassed her for dowry, reported The Hindu.
Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi will hear the case on Monday.
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old model-turned-actor from Noida, was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her husband’s family claimed that she had killed herself.
However, her family has accused her in-laws of persistent domestic violence and demands for dowry, reported Live Law. They have also alleged that Sharma was murdered, according to the BBC.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter based on “media reports and other attending circumstances”.
On Friday, Sharma’s husband Samarth Singh, who had been on the run for over a week, withdrew an anticipatory bail petition he had filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court and surrendered before a court in Jabalpur.
The Bhopal Police subsequently arrested the advocate.
Following this, the Bar Council of India suspended him from legal practice with immediate effect.
In an interim order, the legal body described the accusations against Singh as “grave” and said that they impacted the dignity and public image of the legal profession.
