Rahul Gandhi, MPs briefly detained as Opposition marches to EC office demanding CEC resignation

The Delhi Police on Tuesday briefly detained Opposition MPs including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi during an INDIA bloc march to the Election Commission headquarters to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, The Hindu reported.

The march came as protests are being held in several parts of the country calling for Kumar to resign over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.

The march started from Parliament complex and was stopped by the police about half a kilometre away on Parliament Street before the demonstrators could reach Ashoka Road, where the poll panel’s office is located.

After being released from detention, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were seen inside Akashwani Bhawan, the All India Radio headquarters located next to the Election Commission of India, in an attempt to reach the poll panel’s office, ANI reported.

Other Opposition leaders including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress (Mamata Banerjee faction) leader Abhishek Banerjee and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut participated in the march.
