Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, activist Yogendra Yadav and All India Students’ Association chief Neha Bora were among those detained at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday during a protest to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

This is the second consecutive day that demonstrations were held at Jantar Mantar demanding action against Kumar.

The protesters have raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.

On Friday, Bora, Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha were among the nearly 700 protesters whom the Delhi Police had detained from Jantar Mantar. All persons detained were reportedly released later in the day.

On Saturday, along with Bora, Yadav and Bhushan, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal marched to Jantar Mantar.

The police have said that permission has not been granted for any demonstration and that orders prohibiting a gathering of five or more persons under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita remain in force in the New Delhi district.

The authorities had on Friday also suspended internet services in areas around Jantar Mantar, while the main protest area was barricaded.
