‘Open Intelligence’: An eye-opening account of the future of creative arts in the age of AI

In one of the early chapters of his latest book, Open Intelligence: Education Between Art and Artificial, Saikat Majumdar establishes his thesis argument: Art and artifice shape each other, and hence, in the end, remain inseparable. He further responds to the age-old debatable question of whether creative arts can be taught with distinguished clarity. Majumdar elucidates that “all art has a dimension that is more like science…art forms with more visible scientific patterns have more teachable components…It has been easy for AI to pick up the scientific, learnable patterns and technical foundations of all art forms.”

This structured argument clarifies that creative arts indeed can be taught to some extent, and contradictorily, it is this teachable component that has been easily and effectively acquired by AI. This, however, leads us back to square one – what is the worth of “teaching” creative writing to humans if those teachable components can be learned by AI? What is the unique distinction, then, between the human student of creative arts and the AI student of creative arts?
