The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Maharashtra chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday won the Maharashtra Assembly elections from Nagpur’s Kamthi seat, defeating Congress Suresh Yadavrao Bhoyar by 40,946 votes, according to Election Commission data.
At the end of counting, Bawankule had secured 1,74,979 of the total votes. Bhoyar garnered 1,34,033 votes.
The state’s ruling Mahayuti alliance, of which the BJP is a part, is ahead in the broader Vidarbha region in eastern Maharashtra. The Mahayuti coalition is leading in more than 40 of the 62 constituencies in the region.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance – comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Shiv Sena group led by Shinde and the Nationalist Congress Party group led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar – is headed for an overwhelming victory in the Assembly elections.
At 8 pm on Saturday, the alliance had won 202 seats and was leading in 29 others. A party or coalition needs 145 seats to form the government.
