The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration on Thursday suspended the licence of a canteen at the civic-run Nair Hospital and the 108-year-old Olympia Coffee House in Colaba, reported PTI.

At the Nair Hospital, the inspectors found that safety and health norms were being violated, reported India Today. Its licence was suspended considering the health and safety of patients, the FDA said, adding that legal action was underway.

The hospital’s Dean, Shailesh Mohite, told Scroll that the FDA had conducted inspections at the hospital on February 12 when the mess was closed after lunch.

Mohite added that the hospital authorities were yet to receive a report from the agency about the alleged violations it had found. “They have sent notice to the mess contractor,” he said.

He told India Today that the hospital has three canteens, two of which are functioning. They provide food for patients and their relatives.

The one that was shut after the inspection prepared food for around 400 nurses who are studying and working at the hospital, added Mohite.

Inspection at Olympia Coffee House

The FDA conducted an inspection at the restaurant on Wednesday and found a urinal in the food storage area, reported The Indian Express.
