Kolkata: Scuffle at TMC office as police enter with ‘illegal notice’, alleges party

An altercation broke out between Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee and the Kolkata Police on Thursday when security personnel and officials of the municipal corporation arrived at a party office to remove a banner.

A TMC worker was detained, a video posted by PTI showed.

The TMC alleged that the police had “barged into” Banerjee’s office at Camac Street with what it described as an “illegal notice” to take down the banner.

“Upon hearing, Mr Banerjee rushed to the spot and sought notice from the concerned govt official,” the party said. “The Kolkata Municipal representative failed to display any valid notice...”

With the help of the police, the municipal officials entered the office, assaulted Banerjee and TMC MP Derek O’Brien, the party said.

The official “pushed and heckled” TMC supporters and staff, the party alleged. It further alleged that the clothes of the office’s women security personnel were torn.

TMC said that it will approach the court against the “brutality, harassment and illegal action/trespassing” by the police.
