Jet fuel prices for domestic airlines hiked by 13%

Jet fuel prices for domestic airlines rose by about 13% or Rs 15.8 per litre, on Thursday, PTI reported.

The price of aviation turbine fuel was raised to Rs 137 per litre. This is the third consecutive monthly increase in jet fuel prices.

In September, the prices were increased by Rs 6.2 per litre, following a Rs 5 per litre hike in August.

The latest increase will add to the financial burden on airlines, as aviation turbine fuel accounts for about 40% of their operating expenses.

The war in West Asia has pushed up global oil prices and led to airspace restrictions that have increased operating costs.

On April 26, Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet told the Union government that the country’s aviation sector was on the verge of “stopping operations” and had sought its intervention “for immediate and meaningful financial support to tide over the current situation”.

Air India said on May 13 that it would temporarily suspend its services on certain international routes from June to August due to airspace restrictions over some regions and record-high prices of jet fuel.

Commercial LPG prices hiked

The prices of 19-kg commercial liquefied petroleum gas cylinders were increased by around Rs 62.5 per cylinder from Thursday.

The increase applies to commercial cylinders used by businesses and industrial consumers, while prices of domestic cooking gas cylinders remain unchanged.
