Indore: Second newborn baby who was bitten by rats in hospital dies

The second newborn baby who was bitten by rats at the Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore died on Wednesday, The Indian Express reported.

This was the second fatality after rat bites at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit in the past 24 hours. Another infant who had been bitten by rats died at the institution on Tuesday. The hospital attributed her death to pneumonia, and not the rat bite.

In the second case as well, Jitendra Verma, the deputy superintendent of the hospital, claimed that the baby girl died not because of the rat bite but because of septicemia. She had been suffering from multiple congenital anomalies, the official said.

“Seven days earlier, our surgeons had operated on her,” Verma told The Indian Express. “She had contracted septicemia and her condition was very critical. Despite our best efforts, she passed away this afternoon.”

The second child weighed only 1.6 kilograms and was on a ventilator in the intensive care unit, the hospital said.
