Nine persons, including a toddler, were killed in a fire that broke out in a residential building in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar on Sunday, The Hindu quoted the Delhi Fire Services as saying.
According to a preliminary probe an air-conditioner blast might have triggered the fire, The Indian Express quoted the police as saying.
The Delhi Fire Services received a call about the fire at a four-storey building in Vivek Phase-I at 3.48 am, The Hindu reported.
“Fire was in domestic articles in six flats in the building and bodies recovered from different floors and handed over to Delhi Police crime team,” Division Office M Verma told the newspaper.
The fire had reportedly spread to apartments on the second, third and fourth floors.
“Around 10 to 15 people were rescued from the premises during the firefighting operation,” an unidentified police officer said, adding that two persons with minor injuries were taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
The fire was brought under control by 6.25 am and completely doused by 8 am.
