Five persons were killed after a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Seemapuri on Wednesday, PTI reported.

Three bodies of a pregnant woman, a 12-year-old girl and a child aged around one-and-a-half years were recovered from the site on Thursday.

Later in the day, two more were recovered, PTI quoted an unidentified government official as saying.

The building collapsed at about 3.30 pm on Wednesday, burying portions of two to three adjoining houses under the debris.

Residents said that the building had developed cracks after tremors felt in the national capital because of an earthquake in Uttarakhand on Tuesday. Officials said that the exact cause of the collapse will be investigated.

Eight persons injured in the collapse have been taken to hospital for treatment. Rescue teams were clearing the site.

The incident came a month after a five-storey building in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6, leaving seven persons dead and 12 injured.

That building was reportedly 40 to 50 years old, and repair work was underway in the basement when it collapsed.

The Delhi High Court had said that “callous and criminal conduct” had led to the incident.
