Cyclone Arnab has completed its landfall, with the storm’s centre moving entirely over land, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.
Heavy to very heavy rain was reported in several parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, with some areas recording more than 200 mm of rainfall, the Hindustan Times reported.
The landfall process continued for six hours as the very severe cyclonic storm crossed the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam in Puducherry between 2 am and 8 am, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125 km per hour to 135 km per hour. It weakened into a severe cyclonic storm after completing the landfall process.
The storm is now likely to move north-northwestwards during the next 48 hours and weaken gradually, the department said.
“It will weaken into a cyclonic storm during the next six hours and further into a deep depression during the subsequent six hours,” it said.
