CEC protests updates: 24-hour mobile internet blackout in central Delhi, Opposition meets president

The Delhi Police has imposed restrictions, including orders prohibiting gatherings, curbs on travel to and within the city, and suspension of mobile internet, ahead of the protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The police have also warned persons against joining the demonstration.

Since late Thursday night, the police have been making public announcements near Parliament warning that Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was in force. The section prohibits gatherings of four or more persons, processions and road blockades.

The police personnel are also visiting colleges, mosques, resident welfare associations and other public places to discourage people from joining the protest.

Trains scheduled to arrive in Delhi between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday have been cancelled, while the police have sought the closure of 57 metro stations.

The protest – called by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign, Left groups, student organisations and activists – is being held to demand Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the special intensive revision of voter rolls and to scrap the exercise.
