At least 10,000 persons, including students, farmers and members of Dalit organisations, have been detained across India ahead of a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Cockroach Janta Party alleged on Thursday.
Several student and civil society organisations have also alleged that police are detaining persons travelling to Delhi to stop them from taking part in the protest. The police are also restricting the movement of activists and asking residents not to join the demonstration, they alleged.
The protest – called by CJP, Left groups, student organisations and civil society activists – is being held to demand Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the special intensive revision of voter rolls and to scrap the exercise.
Leaders of the INDIA bloc, student unions and other groups have been holding protests in Delhi since October 2.
