A 20-year-old woman from Assam who had called her family to say that she was feeling unsafe aboard a train from Visakhapatnam to Guwahati was found dead beside a railway track in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, reported The Hindu.

While the railway police said they suspect Himashree Boro fell from the running train, her family alleged that she was murdered.

Boro, a college student from Guwahati, had travelled to Visakhapatnam for a dance competition. She boarded the Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express alone at around 12.15 am on Tuesday, reported The Times of India.

Soon after, she told a friend and family members that she was feeling uncomfortable in a coach full of “unruly, inebriated” men, reported The Indian Express.

She had reportedly also shared a video with her family from inside the train before her phone became unreachable around 3 am.

The family contacted the railway helpline and were told that Railway Protection Force personnel would check on Boro.

Boro’s body was found more than 24 hours later close to the railway tracks in Tekkali in Srikakulam, The Assam Tribune reported.

The police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita section relating to suspicious death.

Members of the B Barooah College Students’ Union staged a protest on Thursday, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to Boro’s death, The Assam Tribune reported.
