Amir Sk showed Rajasthan Police his Aadhaar card and his birth certificate, both of which stated he was from Malda, West Bengal. But the police wanted the 19-year-old construction worker to furnish his voter card. Amir did not have one. Not eligible to vote until last year, he had not bothered obtaining it.

The police took him into custody, keeping him in jail for a few days, before putting him on a flight to Kolkata. From there, he was taken to the border with Bangladesh and forced to cross over – a fate similar to thousands of others expelled by Indian authorities on suspicion that they were illegal immigrants.

Back home, Amir’s distraught family moved Calcutta High Court. A day before a crucial court hearing, Amir’s uncle got a phone call from the Border Security Force.
